Intern to Manager:

Creating Opportunities

During my second year of college, I began a strategic communications internship with the Ball State English Department. The internship functioned with teams of interns assigned to a specific medium of communication. In my first semester I worked on each team: email, design/digital asset creation, social media, and blog. I began as the project manager for the social media team because I had the most experience and knowledge of social media in comparison to my coworkers. The month-long duration of each team shift allowed for me to learn the intricacies and technicalities of multiple platforms and software in addition to the soft and professional skills required by content creation. After two semesters as an intern, I was offered a paid position to pilot the development of communications strategies for the English and history departments, with a projected goal of eventually encompassing communications for all humanities departments at Ball State. As an outreach manager, I was essentially the project manager for the social media team comprised of interns in the position I had served the previous year. This leadership opportunity introduced me to soft skills I had previously not engaged with and helped me become an effective leader on an interpersonal and technical level.
